THE HEALING BENEFITS OF NATURE
While researching our relationships with nature, I came across scientific studies that connect wellness with viewing images of nature.
On April 15, 2024 Canadian Psychological Association posted “Psychology Works” Fact Sheet: Benefits of Nature Exposure”. The Fact Sheet lists studies from 2009 to 2023 that document a variety of benefits to wellbeing that come from experiencing nature. Nature includes first-hand outdoor experiences as well as images of nature.
YOUNG CONNECTIONS WITH NATURE
I was attracted to the wild as a young boy growing up on a farm in southern Saskatchewan. One spring morning my father excitedly took me into a field to catch a glimpse of four Whooping Cranes that had touched down on our land during their migration. It was a rare siting since they were endangered and very few existed in the world at that time.
That moment of seeing the cranes ignited something deep inside me. It was a mix of joy, wonder and a new unexpected and thrilling connection to the cranes. This affection for the wild deepened throughout my life.
DEVELOPING CONNECTIONS WITH NATURE
My career as an award-winning documentary film producer / director / writer and still photographer (CBC ‘The Nature of Things’, Channel Four, BBC Natural History Unit, PBS, Time Magazine…) opened my eyes to the rich biodiversity of life on earth. These experiences gave me invaluable opportunities to document this through television series and photographs.
My life has been about telling stories. That means finding or creating images that touch hearts, open minds, spark wonder and laughter.
When I take a photograph, I don’t set out with a particular image as a goal. Often I’ll walk for hours until something discovers me. I may notice the way light falls on a leaf or rock or on the water. I take pictures rapidly in what feels like a meditation. While taking photographs I feel very connected to the rock, bark or wave – to my focus – that’s hard to put into words. Hence, the photographs.
LEARNING FROM NATURE
Observing nature’s resilience has shown me over and over how she transforms what is broken into beauty. This has led me to appreciate the beauty of the broken, imperfect and transitory. Nature writes mortality and change in HD. And we are part of nature after all.
On a personal level, spending time in nature has helped me to learn better ways to adapt and accept life’s challenges. Nature invites me to be present to each moment of my life. Whether that’s following my breath, watching a hummingbird at the feeder, playing with a grandchild or feeling the gust of wind over my shoulder. Being inside that moment is all I try to do. And I think it’s the best way to be present to my life.
BE THE CALM
MUSEIMAGE features my photographs of the wild beauty of New Brunswick, Canada. They celebrate grand natural scenes and more subtle changes of light over the sea, sand, a shell, rocks and a leaf.
I hope you can also feel the calmness and joy I felt when I took the picture.
